How many people seek asylum in Sweden based on their sexual orientation and/or gender identity/expression and where do they come from? New research from Uppsala University

Pride House, Fri 2 Aug 12:00 PM–12:45 PM

In almost 70 countries, same-sex relationships are criminalized and in another 9
countries there are laws criminalizing gender identity/expression. Some LGBTI people in these
countries flee and seek asylum in Sweden. But what do we know about who comes here and where
they come from? Thomas Wimark, Associate Professor of Cultural Geography at Uppsala University,
presents brand new data from an ongoing research project.

NGOs such as Rainbow refugees Sweden have for many years highlighted the challenges faced by
LGBTI asylum seekers in the asylum process. A major challenge for organizations working to support
LGBTI asylum seekers is that there is a lack of statistics on the demographic composition of the target
group or on asylum decisions. Nor has there been research that has been able to present
representative data on the target group or the asylum process. Rainbow Refugees Sweden invites
Thomas Wimark, Associate Professor of Cultural Geography at Uppsala University, to present his
research with statistics on the demographics of the target group and the asylum process. The
research presented during the seminar is unique both in Sweden and internationally.
